Measure your room with your phone and apply room EQ

Open Sonir Remote on a phone on the same network as the Mac and connect to Bench from the list. On the Measure tab, choose the mic, set the volume with the test sound, and measure at your listening position while Bench plays the sweep through your speakers. Choose the range and the target on the EQ step and press Send to Sonir Bench. The first time, add the room EQ to the chain on the Engine screen; after that each new measurement replaces it on its own.

Checked with Sonir Bench 0.1.62 on 2026-10-12

Before you start

  • Bench playing through your DAC and speakers, with the engine running.
  • Sonir Remote on your phone. The iOS version is on the App Store; the Android version is in a closed test on Google Play.
  • The phone and the Mac on the same network.
  • Optionally a measurement microphone with its calibration file. The phone’s built-in microphone also works, but its own response then shapes the EQ.

Steps

  1. 01Install Sonir Remote

In Bench, open Settings and find the Sonir Remote card. Scan the code with your iPhone camera to open Sonir Remote on the App Store. For Android, follow the three steps on the same card: join the tester group, opt in, then install from Google Play.

  2. 02Connect to Bench from the list

In Sonir Remote, open Settings and look under Connect to Sonir Bench. Macs running Bench on the same network appear in the list; tap Connect. There is no account or registration. Allow local network access on the phone, and incoming connections on the Mac if macOS asks. After the first time the phone reconnects on its own.

  3. 03Choose the mic and set the volume

On the Measure tab, step 1 Setup, choose the measurement mic and, if you have one, import its calibration file. Press Play test sound: Bench plays a test sweep, and the phone tells you whether the volume is right. Turn your amplifier up or down until it says the volume is optimal; it then advances to Measure automatically.

  4. 04Measure at your listening position

Put the microphone at the place you usually listen, pointing up, and press Measure. Bench pauses what you are listening to, bypasses your graph and plays the measurement sweep through your speakers for about ten seconds, then goes back to normal. Keep the room quiet. If noise got in, press Redo. Press Save to keep the measurement on the phone.

  5. 05Make the EQ and send it

On step 3 EQ, choose what to correct (Lows only, or Full range), the target curve, and the lower and upper limits. The chart shows the measured response, the target and the corrected result, and the bands are listed underneath. Press Send to Sonir Bench. Only the filter settings are sent; the recording stays on the phone.

  6. 06Add the room EQ to the chain in Bench

The first time, Bench saves the room EQ to its library and the phone confirms it. On the Engine screen, choose it under Add a saved graph… in the Graph Design card; it carries a Sonir Remote mark. From then on, each EQ you send replaces that one in the chain. Bench never changes which slot you are listening to.

  7. 07Measure again through the EQ

Step 4 Re-measure becomes available once the EQ is playing in Bench. Leave the microphone where it was and measure again: the chart shows before, target and after. If you want to change it, press Adjust EQ again.

Average several positions

Measure at a few positions around your seat and save each one. On the Library tab, press Select, pick the measurements and press Create room EQ: the EQ step opens with their average. Measurements taken through the EQ are left out.

If it does not work

  • The Mac does not appear in the list.

Check that Bench is running, that the phone and the Mac are on the same network, and that Sonir Remote may use the local network. If it still does not appear, use Connect with a QR code on the phone and the QR code under Not in the list? in Bench.

  • The phone says the engine is stopped.

The sweep is played by the engine. Start it on the Engine screen in Bench, or from the Engine tab on the phone.

  • The volume is too quiet, or the input clipped.

Turn the amplifier up or down and play the test sound again. A measurement that is too quiet fails.

  • The EQ was saved but nothing changed.

On the first send it is only saved. Add it to the chain on the Engine screen; later sends replace it.

  • I want to hear it with and without the EQ.

Put the chain with the room EQ in one A/B slot and the chain without it in the other. The comparison guide shows how.
